Home Sweet Farm Market Days

Home Sweet Farm hosts a market day every third Sunday of the month from 2 pm to 4 pm. Owners of local farms from all around the greater Houston area come to sell their products. I bought the best goat cheese I've ever had from the folks at Blue Heron Farm. They were generous with their tastings and entertained my son with pictures of the goats they keep on their farm.
Prices and quantity of the goat cheese sold were similar to what you would buy at any grocery store but taste much, much better. I've spent the past few days cooking angel hair pasta with a scoop of goat cheese on top. It is simply delicious. I also bought cajeta which is caramel made solely from goat milk and sugar. The farm recommends serving it over vanilla ice cream. I've been eating it by the spoonful from the jar and it's amazing. See http://www.blueherontexas.com for more information on this farm and its products.

also ordered  Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys from The Oaks of Mamre farm. They sell pastured poultry, basically chickens and turkeys that are allowed to graze freely on their farm land. The prices are definitely steeper than the ones you would find in a grocery store but for a special holiday, I thought it was worth a splurge (especially since these are the only occasions when we eat meat). Home Sweet Home is in Brennan and is easy to get to from Highway 290. In addition to the fun atmosphere, friendly vendors and numerous children running around, there is a Free Farm Tour at 2:30 which children should also enjoy.  For more information see http://www.homesweetfarm.com/hsf_market_days.htm.
