One of the best places to buy produce is from your local farmer's market. Texas is fortunate to have many of these. You can almost guarantee that the produce has been grown within 100 miles of the market. Much grocery store produce is trucked in from all over the US (and often from outside the US and its laws governing the growing and selling of food). It may be several days old before making its way onto the grocery's shelves. Farmer's market produce also tends to be cheaper than the produce bought in stores. One drawback of course, is you will only be able to buy produce that is in season locally. However, the benefit of buying produce that is fresh, cheap and probably not mass produced outweighs any drawbacks. See below for lists of farmer's markets in the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin areas. There should be one close to you.
